"Once the mind has accepted a plausible explanation for something, it becomes a framework for all the information that is perceived after it” - Ryan Holiday
Once we’ve formed a belief, it becomes easier to justify than update our belief.
Once a belief is formed, the mind tends to stick to it, making it difficult to accept new ideas. Stress, anxiety, deadlines, etc., all exacerbate this phenomenon. They make it even harder to update our beliefs or remain open-minded.
It’s important to stay open-minded and avoid being influenced solely by the actions and behaviours of those around us. But how? The key is Psychological Flexibility - the ability to form 'working' beliefs, instead of 'permanent' beliefs, and Reflection - the ability to consider how our attitudes and behaviours impact those around us.
We help individuals and leaders to develop their ability to identify patterns in their behaviour, analyse the causes and consequences of their actions, and consider alternative perspectives.
Why is this important?
* We all need the ability to adapt to different situations and contexts while remaining open and receptive to the present moment, and in alignment with our values.
* We all need the ability to tolerate and manage uncomfortable emotions, be aware of our thoughts without becoming overly attached to them, and to take action towards meaningful goals, even in the face of obstacles or challenges.
* We all need the ability to reflect on our own thoughts, emotions, and behaviours as they relate to and impact those around us. Understanding how external factors within our environments and relationships influence our thoughts and behaviours, so we become more self-aware and empathetic, as we gain a deeper understanding of our own biases, assumptions, and perspectives.
* We all need the ability to develop a more nuanced view of the world, as we become more attuned to the experiences of others and the broader social and cultural contexts in which we live.
* We all need the ability to consider multiple perspectives and evaluate the potential outcomes of different courses of action to make decisions or solve problems.
By cultivating these abilities, we can all learn to adapt more effectively to the challenges and opportunities that arise in our lives, while staying connected to our values and goals. This will enhance our resilience, mental health, relationships, and productivity.
On a personal & professional level,
this means being more consistent in choosing and acting in line with intrinsically held values, and being more able to change our own behaviours and those of our peers.
For leaders at any level,
this means being more effective in guiding and supporting teams to employ the principles to cultivate effective, trusting, and collaborative relationships, and more successfully implement collective best-practice at every level in the system,
At a team and organisational level,
this means being more effective in integrating personal values with the shared team or organisational values, and being able to cultivate a culture of prosociality.
