Values-Based Governance

Establishing healthy normative environments

Resentful Obedience to Wilful Compliance

We help organisations evolve from a culture of rule-based compliance, to a culture in which everyone involved is intrinsically motivated by the values inherent in the future desired behaviours.

Rule-Based Governance refers to a system where laws, regulations, and policies provide a clear set of guidelines for decision-making and behaviour. This approach is associated with strict adherence to procedures and protocols, enforced through punishment or reward.

In contrast, Values-Based Governance emphasises the importance of ethical principles, values, and norms in guiding thoughts and behaviours.

We recognise that rules and regulations are necessary, but they are not sufficient for ensuring ethical conduct and accountability. Instead, a values-based approach to governance emphasises the need for leaders and organisations to embody and promote shared core values.

Values and norms form the essence of an organisation’s culture.

We help cultivate the capacity for Self-Determined, Values-Driven Behaviours, and enhance the ability of all individuals within the organisation to discern what is important, and develop the confidence to persist with, or change, their behaviour in line with chosen values

We guide and help organisations institute a particularised form of Polycentric Governance, focused on aligning the many centres of decision-making under an overarching set of prosocial values, norms, policies, and practices.

Our approach enables patterns of thought and behaviour to evolve, by connecting current behaviours to the qualities of targeted future behaviours that hold intrinsic worth to individuals.  They will begin to select the values and norms embedded in a shared vision of a preferred future and the behaviours that will bring their vision to life.
